With Star Wars: The Force Awaken out this year, we can expect a slew of games. However, none are as anticipated by franchise fans as Star Wars Battlefront – and rightly so it seems.
DICE Force in everything
This DICE developed multiplayer shooter looks to be doing everything right. Throwing you in as a Rebel or Imperial soldier, you battle amid a whirlwind of laser blasts.
DICE’s history with Battlefield is clearly evident in Battlefront’s tightly constructed gunplay and vehicular combat. On foot you can control the action in either first or third person. We certainly gravitate toward the first person, but appreciate having the option of seeing our Star Wars styled avatar running through the beautifully recreated intergalactic warzones.
From traditional rocket launchers to personal defenses shields, the weapons and abilities on offer expand the tactics available - vital when trying to takedown powerful vehicles. Yes, all of Star Wars’ military machines are on offer, from AT-ATs to X-Wings - all of which you can use to wipe out the opposition.
Bringing balance
There are also hero units. These include characters like Vader and Luke, who bring with them all the Force and light-saber abilities you could want. These heroes must be earned in battle, but once unlocked they prove a dominant power.
Even when not playing as one of these famous characters, Star Wars Battlefront captures the feel of the films with its iconic guns and vehicles. Each laser blast takes you back to your childhood, and it’s hard to suppress a squeal as Tie-Fighters roar overhead.
All conflicts taking place in atmosphere, so no space battles. However, DICE’s arenas soar skywards above planets such as Hoth and Endor, giving you plenty of opportunity to experience sci-fi dog fights. This is probably a wise gameplay choice, because once star bound the gameplay options would be notably reduced.
Don't get cocky, kid
Star Wars Battlefront will be coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 17th 2015, with free content updates coming in early December to accompany Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
